Welcome to the XXIV SPQ Portuguese National Chemistry Meeting
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we are pleased to announce that the XXIV SPQ Portuguese National Meeting focused on “Chemistry For Sustainable Development” will be held in Coimbra next 1-3 July 2015. We consider that the broad scope of the meeting is a unique opportunity to bring people from diverse fields of academy and industry togethers, with the main dream of using chemistry towards the development of a sustainable world. We invite scientists, industrials, decision makers, and students to come together to discuss the future of Chemistry and its relevance in the solution of global problems. The multidisciplinarity of the conference is well demonstrated by the parallel sessions chaired by recognized Chemistry leaders (Directors of each Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society) that are interested in using Chemistry for the development of a sustainable world.
The conference will have Plenary Lectures given by reckoned national and international scientists, parallel invited lectures, oral communications selected from submitted abstracts and poster communications. Moreover, we highlight a Discussion Panel, that will be together teachers, industrials, directors of Portuguese Chemistry Departments and National Leaders of the Educational System to discuss the sustainability of chemistry in Portuguese secondary schools and Universities.
Moreover, since the United Nations (UN) in General Assembly - 68th Session- proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) the organizing committee will organize a special session, since light is also a relevant issue where chemistry has its place, in order to contribute to a sustainable world.
The dialogue between teachers, academic researchers and industrials will be crucial in solving the challenges for the “sustainability of chemistry in Portugal” and also the use of “Chemistry for Sustainability” Certainly, the University of Coimbra awarded with the UNESCO world Heritage since 2013 and also with the Catedra UNESCO for Biodiversity in 2013, will be a pleasant place to stay and discuss these crucial issues.
We would like to particularly encourage students, early stage researchers (both in industry and academia) and secondary school teachers to attend the meeting.
Abstracts from all chemistry areas focused on subjects such as Sustainable catalytic processes, Application of bio-renewable resources, Alternative energy, New Materials, Photochemistry, computational chemistry, Analytical chemistry and Environment, Chemistry for water remediation, Chemistry for sustainable food development or Chemistry for sustainable health development are welcome

About Coimbra
University of Coimbra
By signing “Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis”, King Dinis created the oldest university of the country and one of the oldest in the world. Dated from 1290, the document originated the General Study, recognised in the same year by Pope Nicholas IV. A century after the birth of the nation, the University of Coimbra germinated. It starts operating in Lisbon but, in 1308, it is transferred to Coimbra, alternating between the two cities until 1537, when it is definitely settled in the city of river Mondego.
Initially confined to the Royal Palace, the University spread throughout the city of Coimbra, while modifying its landscape and making of it the University City. It later enlarged with the creation of Pole II, dedicated to Engineering and Technology, and with a third pole devoted to Life Sciences.
To study at the University of Coimbra is to pursue the intellectual history of the country in the school that graduated some of the most distinguished personalities of national culture, science and politics.
With over seven centuries, the University of Coimbra has a unique tangible and intangible heritage, keystone in the scientific culture of Europe and the World; a capital that the University of Coimbra has applied to UNESCO World Heritage.
